There is something profoundly therapeutic in listening to the birds sing while sipping coffee and answering emails.
Generally, I tend to write more in the early morning hours, usually before the sun is even up. I don't know why. Maybe that sleep haze is what spurs on my creativity. Last night, however, I was on a roll and knocked out a full chapter before bed.
You know, I have heard people say that the writing is the hard part. The old saying of "writer's block" and what have you lure's one into thinking that the difficult aspect of the whole process. Now, do not get me wrong, writing is definitly not the walk in the park they make you think in the movies. The herione of the story has had her heart broken, yet again, she sits at her trusty laptop, box of tissues conveniently located in arms reach, and pounds out the next bestseller in a 4 minute montage. Yeah, if only it were that easy.
I believe that the entire experience is difficult. From writing that first page to hosting your first book signing. Writing the work is only half the job. The rest is getting it into reader's hands. One has to be tenacious just to make this work. If you are one of the lucky few who has been blessed to be represented by a publishing firm, a whole lot of this won't make sense. However, if you self-published your book, and that firm has limited author's marketing resources, you know what I am talking about.
In this case, stubborness will pay off. Never take No for an answer. I spent two years sending my manuscript out to publishers. What I ended up with was a pat on the head and a "We can't make money on you kid." Now, here I am. When one avenue was closed to me, I found another one. It is certainly a harder road to travel, rocky and full of potholes, but when I finally get to the end of that road, trust me. I will know without a doubt that I have arrived.
